Open World

An open world of the whole planet, built from OpenStreetMap and other open data and explored on foot (or by car or bike) in the browser. Every street, building and shop is real; the details are generated.

Open World is a browser-based, third-person 3D explorer of the whole planet, built from real open data. You spin a globe, search for any place on Earth, zoom in to a street and press Walk here — and the world streams in around you as you walk, drive or bike. Every road, building, park and shop comes from OpenStreetMap; the materials, roof colors, people and traffic are generated. It starts in downtown Davis, California, which has extra hand-tuned detail.

Try it live at open-world-sigma-two.vercel.app.

What’s in it

  • The whole world on a globe. 3D globe with a place search; zoom to any street and walk it in third person. Share your location and you start where you are.
  • Real terrain, buildings and streets. Elevation from open terrain tiles; roads with widths fitted to the buildings around them, crosswalks, sidewalks, curbs, bike paths, parks, parking stalls. Building heights from OpenStreetMap where available; styles inferred otherwise. In the US, each roof’s colour is measured from USGS aerial photos.
  • Characters, cars and bikes. Pick a name and character; walk, run, sprint, jump, with an over-the-shoulder camera and collision against buildings, trees and parked cars. Press V for a car (six models with different handling) or B for a bike; W A S D to drive.
  • Live traffic and signals. ~20 cars drive around you, keep their distance, slow at junctions and stop at traffic lights that cycle where OpenStreetMap maps them.
  • Real time and weather. The sun is where it should be for the local time and date; day / sunset / night cycles; live or chosen weather.
  • Multiplayer. See other players nearby in the same world, with names, over a Cloudflare Workers relay.
  • Turn-by-turn navigation. Routing via OSRM on FOSSGIS servers, with lanes and a minimap route.
