CratesDiff is a website I maintain that lets you compare any two versions of a Rust crate from crates.io and see exactly what changed, right in the browser. Think of it as an open-source alternative to diff.rs, built so you can review precisely what a dependency upgrade brings in before you take it.

Why I built it

CratesDiff is directly inspired by diff.rs. I relied on diff.rs for the same job — seeing what actually changed between two crate releases — but ran into issues with it: some diffs were incomplete, with files missing from the comparison. CratesDiff was built to address exactly that, so the diff you see is the full source change rather than a partial one.

Upgrading a dependency often means trusting a version bump without ever looking at the code behind it. CratesDiff makes the actual source-level change visible: you pick two releases and get a full diff, so a security or code review can be grounded in what really changed rather than in the changelog alone.

What it does

  • Renders full-source diffs between any two versions of a crate pulled straight from crates.io.
  • Runs entirely in the browser — no local checkout or tooling required.
  • Supports commenting on the diff, which makes it useful for code review and collaboration.
