Alexa Privacy

Smart devices like Alexa are becoming increasingly popular in our homes. These devices are always listening to us, waiting for the wake word and respond to our commands. But do these devices collect any information about us? Do they use this information to show us targetted advertisements? This project aims to understand the privacy implications of using Alexa.

This work is a continuation of previous work on Tracking, Profiling, and Ad Tatgetting in the Alexa Echo Smart Speaker Ecosystem. THat project revaled that Alexa devices are collecting information about us and using it to show us targetted advertisements. However, Amazon claims that only the system calls are recorded and used for targetted advertisements. This project aims to understand whether the voice characteristics are also used for targetted advertisements.
